Good Friday is the day on which the church commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus.

Virtual Economic & Ecological Way of the Cross
at 12 noon
Zoom Webinar
RSVP
For over 20 years, Maryknoll, Pax Christi, and many others have gathered on Good Friday to commemorate the passion of Christ through a Way of the Cross among D.C. institutions. This year, we will gather virtually. The observance of Christ’s passion is an opportunity to reflect on the ways we have broken our covenant with God at the expense of other persons and creation. For each station we will focus on a different economic or ecological challenge or sign of hope for our times. Persons of all faiths are welcome. Please join us for this virtual prayer gathering!

beginning with 10 minutes of silence

Blessed be our God,For ever and ever. Amen.

Almighty God, we pray you graciously to behold this your family, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed, and given into the hands of sinners, and to suffer death upon the cross; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Psalm 22
My God my God, why have you forsaken me:why are you so far from my help, and from my cry of distress?
O my God, I cry out in the daytime, but you do not answer:at night also, but I get no relief.
But you are the Holy One:enthroned on the praises of your people.
Our ancestors trusted in you:they trusted and you delivered them.
They called to you and were rescued:they put their trust in you,and were not disappointed.
But I am a wormand something less than human:an object of scorn and an outcast of the people.
All those who see me laugh me to scorn:they curl their lips and toss their heads saying,
You trusted in God for deliverance:if God cares for you, let God rescue you.
But you are the one who took meout of the womb:you kept me safe upon my mother’s breast.
On you have I been cast ever since I was born:and you are my Godeven from my mother’s womb.
Be not far from me, for trouble is close at hand:and there is no one to help me.
Many bulls have come around me:great bulls of Bashanclose in on me from every side.
They open wide their mouths at me:like ravening and roaring lions.
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint:my heart within my breast is melted like wax
My mouth is as parched as dry clay,my tongue clings to my jaws:and I am laid in the dust of death.
Many dogs have come around me:and the wicked hem me in on every side.
They pierce my hands and my feet,I can count all my bones:they stand staring and gloating over me.
They share out my garments among them:and they cast lots for my clothing.
Do not stand far off from me O Lord:you are my helper, come quickly to my rescue.
Deliver me from the sword:my precious life from the mauling of dogs.
Save me from the lion’s mouth:my afflicted soul from the horns of wild cattle.Part Two
I will declare your name to my people:in the midst of the assembly I will praise you.
Give praise all you that fear the Lord:proclaim God’s greatness, all you children of Jacob, stand in awe all you children of Israel.
For you O God have not despised or abhorredthe poor in their affliction:you have not hidden your face from them, but you heard them when they called to you.
You are the theme of my praisein the full assembly:my vows I will performin the sight of those who fear you.
The poor shall eat and be satisfied:those who seek you O Lord shall praise you,may they be in good heart forever.
Let all the ends of the earth rememberand turn to you O Lord:and let all the familiesof the nations bow down before you.
For yours is the kingdom O Lord:and you are the ruler over the nations.
As for those who sleep in the grave, how shall they worship you:all those who go down to the dust, how shall they tell of youto the generations that are yet to come.
To a people as yet unbornthey shall make known:the saving deeds you have done.

Solemn Prayers of Love & Solidarity

Dear People of God: Our heavenly Maker sent his Child into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world through Christ might be saved; that all who believe might be delivered from the power of sin and death, and become heirs with Christ of everlasting life. We pray, therefore, for people everywhere according to their needs. Let us pray for all nations and peoples of the earth, and for those in authority among us; for Donald, the President of the United States, for the Congress and the Supreme Court, for the Members and Representatives of the United Nations, for all who seek and serve the common good. That by God’s help we may seek justice and truth, and live with integrity in peace. Silence Almighty God, kindle, we pray, in every heart the true love of peace, and guide with your wisdom those who take counsel for the nations of the earth; that by the power of your Spirit the peace which is founded on justice may be established throughout the world; through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

Let us pray for God’s Jewish people, our ancestors in faith, for greater understanding among all people of faith, and of no faith, for the removal of hatred and bitterness of heart that God will grant us grace to be faithful to the divine covenant and to grow in love of God’s name. Silence Lord God of Abraham and Hagar and Sarah, bless the children of these our ancestors: Christian, Jew and Muslim; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; and unite us in bonds of love; through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

Let us pray for all who suffer and are afflicted in body or in mind; for the hungry and the homeless, the destitute and the oppressed, for the sick and the wounded, for those in loneliness, fear and anguish, for those who face temptation, doubt and despair, for the sorrowful and the bereaved, for the victims of violence, for prisoners and captives, for all at the point of death and those who watch over them, that God in mercy will comfort and relieve us, grant us the knowledge of divine love, and stir up in us the will to minister to those in need.

Silence

Gracious God, the comfort of all who sorrow, the strength of all who suffer: let the cry of those in misery and need come to you, that we may find your mercy present with us in all our afflictions; and give us, we pray, the strength to serve one another for the sake of the One who suffered for us, your Child Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

Let us pray for all those who have not received Love as we find it in the Gospel of Christ; for those who have never heard a word of Love, for those who have lost their faith, for those hardened by sin or indifference, for the contemptuous and the scornful, for those who are enemies of the cross of Christ and persecutors of his disciples, for those who in the name of Christ have persecuted others, that God will open our hearts to the truth of love, and lead us to faith and acceptance.

Silence

Merciful God, Creator of all the peoples of the earth and lover of all souls; have compassion on all who do not know you; let your love be preached with grace and power to those who have not heard it; turn the hearts of those who resist it; and bring home to your fold those who have gone astray; that there may be one flock under the one we call Shepherd, Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

Let us commit ourselves to our God, and pray for the grace of a holy life, that, with all who have departed this world and have died in the peace of Christ, and those whose faith is known to God alone, we may understand ourselves as worthy to enter into the fullness of joy of our Savior Jesus, and receive the crown of life in the day of resurrection.

Silence

O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your goodness, carry out the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their completeness by the one through whom all things were made, your Child Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you, in the freedom of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God,we pray you to set your passion, cross and deathbetween your judgment and our soulsnow and at the hour of our death.Give mercy and grace to the living;pardon and rest to the dead;to your holy Church peace and concord;and to us sinners everlasting life and glory;for with the Father and Holy Spirit you live and reign, one God, now and forever.Amen.
