Community Health Alert
Please be advised the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC Health Department) is investigating a cluster of Legionnaires’ disease in Central Harlem (ZIP codes 10027, 10030, 10035 and 10037).
For the updated number of cases, visit nyc.gov/health/legionnaires.
The NYC Health Department is testing the water from all cooling tower systems in the area of the cluster.
The risk to most people is low, but if you have flu-like symptoms, see a health care provider right away. Symptoms include cough, fever, chills, muscle aches, and shortness of breath.
The likely source of the bacteria causing this pneumonia in the community is a cooling tower in the affected area. Cooling towers are water systems usually found on the top of buildings. They control the temperature of cooling systems, such as central air conditioning or refrigeration. The cooling towers spray mist from the top that can contain the bacteria. All of the cooling towers in the affected area are being tested by the Health Department.
This is not an issue with any building’s plumbing system. It is safe for you to drink water, bathe, shower, cook, and use your air conditioner.

This year’s theme, Black Constellation: Mapping Our Joy, Dreams, and Liberation, invites New York City to gather in a curated soundscape of remembrance, joy, and release—connecting ancestral memory to future vision.
Returning for its second year in partnership with Harlem Week, Afribembé will take over the main stage at Grant’s Tomb on Sunday, August 10, from 4–6 PM, transforming public space into a celebration of spiritual resilience, ancestral memory, and Afrofuturist imagination. Hosted by award-winning artistMichael Manswell, the event is free and open to all.
CCCADI and Harlem Week are two institutions aligned in mission: highlighting the magic of Harlem and bringing even more magic to its streets. From the days of the Harlem Renaissance to the present, Harlem has been a beacon of Black excellence—a hotbed for creativity, joy, and resistance, and a home for the African Diaspora.
