Christmas Eve 2025

This Christmas Eve, the twinkling lights from window sill candles and a colorfully decorated Christmas tree lit St. Mary’s Sanctuary with a profound message of hope.
With the support of our worship team and the addition of special musical guests from angelic singer April Armstrong and smooth guitarist Ayodele Maakheru, Rev. Mary invited us to reflect on one of Thomas Merton’s essays from a collection called Raids on the Unspeakable.
Merton reminds us that Christ came into this world “uninvited.” A world that he describes as “nauseated with life” and with “no room” for nature, quiet, solitude, thought, attention, or [intentional] awareness.”
In response, Rev. Mary grounds us in the current realities of the state of our world today: “So much violence, the violence of hatred, anti-semitism, anti-Palestinian, anti-transgender, anti-Blackness, deep misogyny, at its core anti-human words and actions.”
So, where is hope to be found in a world so “inhuman” ?
Merton reminds us that we find hope in each other by recognizing that the image of God is indeed in everyone.
In allyship and solidarity, we find that our liberation is bound together.
Protecting each other means protecting the image of God.
We ended the evening by lighting our neighbors’ candles one by one, fluttering around carefully to ensure that everyone’s light was aflame. Lighting the way for one another, we surrounded the entirety of the dimly lit sanctuary and sang Silent Night and Noche de Paz. A beautiful reminder that we did not come into this circle alone.
In this “demented world” where we are nauseated with violence after violence, let us take the call to (as Rev. Mary summarizes):
“Speak hope.
Be human in this most inhuman of ages.
Guard the image of every human for it is the image of God.”

Connie & Jessie Mae Food Pantry
Thank you to all who made our last food pantry possible!
This Wednesday, December 17th, a handful of volunteers, both new and our consistent crew of regulars, worked hard to get healthy food to more than 100 of our neighbors in Harlem. Raisin Bran Cereal, olive oil, cherry tomatoes, spinach, green peppers, and other fresh produce and dry food staples were in abundance.
Volunteers and friends from the St. Mary’s Church community, Unity Fellowship Church, and the local Harlem community worked so hard that we have no pictures to show for it!
Thank you to those who helped make our December Double Food Pantries run as smoothly as possible!
Our next food pantry will begin in the new year on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.
If you would like to volunteer, please contact the Rector
(rector@stmarysharlem.org)for more information.
We need hands for distributing food and for set up and clean up!

The Welcome Place
Fridays 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm
St. Mary’s offers a new, volunteer led, “Welcome Place” with open times on Friday afternoons in the Undercroft for anyone in our community looking for respite, though we are particularly reaching out to people experiencing homelessness.
The goal of the Welcome Place is to support people to find their belonging in this community whether they have been here all their lives, recently moved, or are new immigrants.
The Welcome Place offers some peace and kindness, a snack or a cold (or hot) drink; there are board games and arts and crafts for those who are interested.
For more information, please contact Lysander Puccio.
Volunteers support conversation for those who desire it, and provide information about and referrals to St. Mary’s based programs (Mail Service, CHHMP Clinic, 12 Step programs, Yoga or monthly pantry), or partner organizations (like African Services Committee).
The program ends with a smooth transition to Movie Night including a meal for those who choose to stay.
Volunteers plan to engage participants about what is most helpful and useful to them, and we hope to grow in our capacity to offer support including the future possibilities (with appropriate funding and staffing) to offer showers, laundry, and social work.
How can you help? Donate a laptop: Volunteers would like also to assist people to complete ID NYC applications, or navigate Access HRA accounts to apply for Fair Fares or SNAP. A laptop computer will enable them to do this.
